The name of "Sunrise Hall" above the shops in Canterbury Shopping Centre marks the name of the site of the "Rising Sun Hotel", first licenced in 1848. It was built by George Dent, brother-in-law of the boxing star William Parkes (Bill Sparkes) who had travelled to London in1847 to join the champions who boxed at the "Rialto of the Ring", the boxing saloon of the "Rising Sun" hotel near Piccadilly. Canterbury's hotel of the same name was built the year Parkes returned; the licence was held for a time by his brother, Tom, whose pugilistic name was "The Sprig of Myrtle".
