Mayor John Sproule, 1890-7
The first meeting of the Canterbury Municipal Council was held at John Sproule’s residence on 19 June, 1879 with one absentee, Edwin Sayers. John Sproule was chosen as the mayor, perhaps prior to the meeting, though the minutes make no mention of the election.[1] Sproule suffered from ill-health and often missed council meetings, and resigned on 18 February, 1880, having served less than a year in office. John Campbell Sharp, who had just been elected to the Council was chosen as the next mayor.[2]
